How to Keep a Cool Head in Troubling Times – a 3-week meditation series

Anger is one of the most common and destructive delusions, and it afflicts our mind almost every day. To solve the problem of anger, we first need to recognize the anger within our mind, acknowledge how it harms both ourself and others, and appreciate the benefits of being patient in the face of difficulties. We then need to apply practical methods in our daily life to reduce our anger and finally to prevent it from arising at all. This 3-week course is based on How To Solve Our Human Problems, by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

There is nothing more destructive than anger. It destroys our peace and happiness, and impels us to engage in negative actions that lead to untold suffering. If we examine the kinds of situation in which we get angry, we shall probably find that most of our anger arises when our desires are frustrated and we do not get what we want, or because we are faced with a situation we do not want or like. Learn how to recognise anger before it takes hold in your mind, and respond more constructively to life’s difficulties.

19th April 7:30pm – Keeping Your Cool

Since it is impossible to fulfil all our desires or to stop unwanted things happening to us, we need to find a different way of relating to frustrated desires and unwanted occurrences. We need to learn patient acceptance. Patience is a mind that is able to accept, fully and happily, whatever occurs. Learn how to keep cool and stay happy, even when things are going wrong!

26th April 7:30pm – Conquering Anger with Love

The capacity to remain completely unruffled in situations of great provocation, and to feel genuine compassion for those who are deliberately trying to harm us, is a sign of high spiritual realizations and the result of a great deal of mental preparation! But if we train our mind in the practice of patience, little by little we shall certainly gain control over our anger. Finally we shall reach the point where we no longer need to make an effort not to get angry – anger will simply no longer be a natural response to hardship or provocation.

This retreat will be led by Gen Kelsang Jigme. Ordained as a monk in 1997 by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Gen Jigme has studied, practised and taught Kadampa Buddhism under Geshe Kelsang’s guidance in major Kadampa Centres throughout the UK for many years. He shows a humble, kind example as a practitioner and his clear explanations of Buddha’s teachings give us the confidence to practise them in our daily life.
